8 tips for a Healthy Student Life

Health gets pushed aside when it comes to being a student. Much is sacrificed including sleep and diet just to name a few. My first year of uni was also my first time living away from home independently, and these tips are a summary of what I learnt. I can testify that you don't have to live off 2 minute noodles and weetbix OR rely on coffee for your morning classes. I hope these tips help you on your way to a more balanced life as a student.  

  1. Eat Breakfast - You probably hear this all the time, but there’s a reason for that. Science shows skipping breakfast leads to a decrease in concentration and an increase in snacking and sugar cravings due to the destabilisation of blood sugar. Healthy Brekkie options coming soon!
  2. Stock up on meals and snacks - Instead of cooking for one at night, cook a normal family size dinner. Freeze single portions for when you're in one of those ‘I can’t be bothered cooking’ moods. It will save you money and time in the long run.
  3. Hydrate those cells - It’s so easy to forget to drink water, especially in the winter when all we feel like doing is snuggling up with a blanket and cup of tea. Keep a bottle of water at your desk and aim for 2L a day.
  4. Find time to unwind and relax - Stress can cause numerous problems, including poor digestion and brain fog. Create a list of things where you feel relaxed and refreshed, be it a bath, reading a book, painting, anything that gives yourself a break.
  5. Socialise - Surround yourself with positive people that inspire and encourage you, life wasn’t designed to be done alone.
  6. Get moving - It doesn’t have to be an intense workout. I struggled to find time to exercise in my first semester, but once I began to prioritise it, I noticed the benefit and made it a habit. Even a 20 minute walk in your lunch break will help you stay more alert in the afternoon by increasing blood flow to the brain.
  7. Feed your soul - For me, reading my bible, weekend brunch dates and family dinner nights always make me feel so grateful for everything I have. It reminds me that my life doesn’t revolve around school and assignments.
  8. Sleep! - This should probably be the first point, especially for students. 7-9 hours of sleep is recommended by most health care professionals. When we are in a deep sleep, hormones are released that help maintain a healthy weight and make us feel happy!

Remember to enjoy this short season of your life, you won't be a student forever.
